It got me good, you guys.
It's been a long time since I've been knocked down this hard on my ass from a sickness. Pretty sure I recovered faster last year when I had strep throat.
Either way, days later, I seem to be on the mend despite one goopy left eyeball, a headache from hell and zero voice to speak of. (haha. I'm funny.)
Joining me on this journey to health and wellness is my two year old. Fortunately he didn't get knocked down as hard as I did. Or he did and he's just not as much of a wimp as his poor ole' mama. But either way, I think both of us are going to make a full recovery this week.
Sleeping it off.
Thank goodness because I need to get back to work, yo. Between the puppies last week and this current germ fest, I am way behind.
So let's get caught up, eh? Starting with this blog post.
I'm going to start with a quick little probably really long recap of the night my dog delivered two (not one as promised by the vet) but two! little puppies! (so if you want to just skip ahead to cute puppy pics, feel free to keep on scrolling. For those of you who like reading dog birth stories, here ya go!)
It was about 2:30 a.m. when I first heard her yelping and woke up to find her rooting through dirty laundry in my closet for a place to birth. Yuck. Of course, she would have nothing to do with any of the whelping box options specifically designed for this instance. Whatevs.
I hurried and cleaned up the closet as best I could. Laid out a bunch of puppy pads and old sheets and hoped for the best.
If you know me, you'll know that I'd been researching dog whelping like a crazy person for the past month, and felt sorta prepared. I had my "whelping kit" nice and handy, a bunch of old towels, blankets, sheets, etc.
I pulled up my phone and started reading through some websites on the stages of labor just to confirm she was in fact in stage one labor. The yelping was occasional, but growing more frequent. At this point, Jack woke up scared and wanted to know what was going on.
So Daniel took him in the living room with zero hopes of getting him back to sleep. Which is why they turned on a movie instead. Meanwhile I made coffee. Jack was crying for me, so I helped calm him down and then I went to poor myself a cup of that coffee because I knew I was going to be awake for a few hours at least before she actually went into labor.
I'd been taking her temp regularly and did so right before bed. It hadn't dropped. So I knew we were probably a while out yet. She really wasn't showing that she was having contractions or anything so I wasn't worried.
But as I went to get a cup of coffee I thought: "Nah, I'll go check on Freyja first."
Good thing I did because I got in there to see a little puppy she was licking awake.
So yeah.
All that prep and stress. Blah.
Anyway, I helped her get the pup cleaned up a little bit but she mostly did it herself.
A bunch of other gross stuff happened that I'm not going to talk about because it's super TMI and if you want info on all of that, there are plenty of other online resources you can Google. :)
Moving on.
So we get the pup all set up nursing.

Jack and Daniel come into the closet to see the puppy and check on Freyja. Meanwhile she won't stop panting.
The vet told us he only saw one puppy on the x-ray so the thought that she was still in labor honestly didn't even cross my mind. I thought maybe she was having a complication. So I was about to call the ER vet in 10 minutes if she didn't calm the eff down.
Well I set down my phone just in time to see another little pup pop out.
Freyja and I both just looked at it like, WTF is that? Daniel comes in and I'm like,"SHE JUST HAD ANOTHER PUPPY GAHHHH!!!"
And Jack is like, "OOOOH I WANNA SEE"
And then I helped her get the sack off the puppy because she wasn't really responding. And then I had to ruff him up a little with a towel and sucked some gunk from his mouth and nose with a bulb syringe. And then he woke up and started rooting for mommy.
She handled the rest. Much to my amazement, joy and relief.

I was incredibly nervous that Freyja would have issues with motherhood since she's still a puppy herself. But she's done really great.
She had a clean bill of health at the vet post delivery and the puppies are gaining great! They've both almost doubled their birth weight of around 4 oz each to almost 8 oz in the last 5 days. They are still tiny, but you can tell each day how much bigger they are getting.
At the vet. She was curled up around those puppies like, "leave my babies alone. they're mine!"
Freyja can usually be found in the box with them or cooling off and taking a break on the tile, whilst keeping her eyes on the little guys.

Break time while supervising :)
Yup, both boys.
My house really likes testosterone. :P
We still aren't 100 percent sure what we are doing with the puppies when they are old enough for us to find them new homes. I've had about 20 bazillion people ask me if they can have one, and I don't want anyone to think we are trying to play favorites. We just aren't sure what we are going to do yet.
Initially when she was only having one (or so we thought) I knew we'd keep it because we'd end up getting so attached. But now, I don't know. We have a lot of extra factors to consider that are kind of up in the air right now, so based on how those things turn out, we will make our decision. And hopefully in the next 7 weeks or so, we'll be more confident about that.
But for those of you who have expressed interest in wanting a puppy, just know that I am not blowing you off. I just don't know what is going on yet, but I promise to keep you all posted as soon as I know!
I do know they are going to be super cute little pups and I can't wait until they are bigger and able to start walking and playing and interacting (and Freyja stops being so overprotective and giving me the stink eye every time I try to hold one. lol)

Anyway, that is pretty much it around here. If you want to see more cute pics of puppies on the regular, be sure to follow me on Instagram @samanthasstory.
Also in the meantime if any of you all know a good way to get your voice back quickly, lemme know. Although you don't really need a voice to go to work, right? ;)
Now go and have a wonderful Sunday, everyone! I'll just be over here practicing my inner Ariel!! <3
