On being Thankful

This was going to be your typical obligatory Thanksgiving Day post where I tell you all about how thankful I am for my son and husband, family, job, house, etc.

And I am thankful for those things. I AM. More than I ever thought I could be.

But I have to share an experience I had this week that really put so much into perspective for me.

For work (I'm a newspaper reporter) I was working on an article about homelessness in our community to run in conjunction with a fundraiser the paper is doing to help those in need (more info on how to donate later.)

I met with a single mom of four kids, ages 11 to 16. She fled a scary domestic violence situation a few years ago and never looked back. She now floats between living in the local shelter and staying in her car.

Her story absolutely broke my heart. It's cold at night and I can't imagine how hard it must be for her to get by day to day with the responsibility of those kids weighing over head while just working a minimum wage job.

I'll share my full article when it gets published this weekend but I just wanted to share what an eye-opening experience this was.

After my interview with her, a co-worker and I went and got her and her family a few things to help them stay warm, eat and have fun. I don't share this because I want to brag about how awesome we are, but because I want to express that there is so much we all take for granted, myself included.

I don't have all I want, but I definitely have all I need.

THAT is plenty for me to be thankful for.

And lastly, yes, the best things in my life aren't things at all. I don't have a lot of super close friends in real life, but I have my family and they are truly amazing.

Love you all!

And especially thankful for him <3
