The day of no napping

Jack has always been a terrible napper. From day one I never had that sleepy little newborn so many of my friends and family seem to have. Wide-eyed and alert he is in most of his photos I took from those early days. Napping was a continued struggle as he got older. I've posted about this before, but Jack had to be held for just about every single nap either by me, his daddy or his baby sitter. It was fine. We had a system, but I was sure glad at around 14 months when he transitioned to one nap a day and was willing to do so on his own. His naps actually got better and longer. He seemed more rested.

Until yesterday.

Yesterday was the day of no naps. As much as Jack is a skilled nap fighter, he still at least always lost the battle. I am not sure what made yesterday different, but for some reason he didn't nap. And he really wasn't too upset about it.

Except that time I wouldn't let him draw on my white walls with blue pen.

I figured he'd crash early - around six. One time he fell asleep early like that and the night was awful because he missed dinner so he was hungry and wanted to nurse all night. So yesterday, instead of letting him crash, I fed him before he could (he sobbed and begged for "CHICKEN") so chicken it was.

He must have got a second wind after that because he was giggly and playful and in a great mood. So I played with him and had so much fun.

Finally, around 8:30 - his normal bedtime, he crashed and pretty much slept the rest of the night.

It was really weird.

Fortunately today he fell asleep around his regular nap time and crashed for about 1.5 hours, thus allowing me to get my work done and write this blog post.

I just sure hope the no-nap thing won't become a habit. I waited for 14 months to finally get to the point where I could be productive during naps instead of having (and loving) to hold him constantly. As much as I loved the cuddles, I also love finally being able to get some stuff done. So if those naps go away, so does my short-lived period of productivity.

Unfortunately Jack follows in his mama's footsteps far too often. I was done taking naps around age 2 as was my father, so I'm pretty sure nap-fighting is as genetic a trait as the eyes we share.

*sigh*
